12 Glasgow ghost sightings to make your blood curdle ahead of Halloween – Glasgow Live

Down the years, Glasgow has recorded a long list of paranormal incidents, ghostly apparitions and spine-tingling manifestations.

Scores of Glasgow’s reported sightings have been collected together and are available on website The Paranormal Database, which examines folkloric, paranormal and cryptozoological locations in the UK and beyond.

And with Halloween fast approaching, we thought it would be worthwhile to take a look at a dozen of the most notorious spooky Glasgow incidents from down the decades. Read on if you dare.

Septimus Pitt

Where: Mitchell Library
Activity: Haunting Manifestation
Reported: 2000s

While Septimus Pitt is a phantom created by Scottish poet Brian Whittingham, staff at the Mitchell have reported icy chills on the second floor of the building.

Shawled Woman

Where: Former Graham’s Bar (now O’Brien’s), Saltmarket
Activity: Haunting Manifestation
Reported: Unknown

An elderly woman wearing a shawl covering her head would once make infrequent appearances to staff and visitors alike.

The Gurning Man

Where: Crosshill area
Activity: Other
Reported: 1976-1979

A story popular on the internet says that over a four year period several women were said to have encountered a strange looking man who made animalistic sounds. The figure appeared in both homes and along streets, quickly vanishing without trace.

Sounds of Children

Where: Cathedral House Hotel
Activity: Haunting Manifestation
Reported: Unknown

The sounds of children have been reported coming from the top floor of this hotel. Other people have claimed to feel something invisible brush against them. In a newspaper interview in 2022, it was stated that Suzi Quatro had reported seeing a ghost here to the manager.

Bathtime Murder

Where: Glasgow – Blythswood Square, private house
Activity: Haunting Manifestation
Reported: Unknown

A family living here reported being witness to a ghostly murder – a beautiful woman drowning a man in the bath. The family moved out soon after.

Little Girl

Where: Arches, below Glasgow’s Central Station
Activity: Haunting Manifestation
Reported: January 2009

In the 1990s, a basement in Midland Street became home to the Alien Wars experience which transformed a network of tunnels into a battleground for marines and Aliens from the hit run of movies, which originally starred Sigourney Weaver.

People queued for hours to get into the annual event, which began here in Glasgow and went on to tour the UK regularly.

Reported in the press, the Alien Wars show was home to a phantom little girl dressed in old style clothing. While actors from the show were said to be afraid of the ghost, the phantom herself was reputedly frightened off by the show’s special effects.

Screaming Children

Where: Glasgow – Museum of Transport

Reported: 2000s

A security guard at the old Museum of Transport building reportedly encountered several spooky occurrences during his time working there, including the screams of children, balls of blue light and sightings of a headless woman.

Scratcher

Where: Glasgow – Radio Clyde, Studio Three
Activity: Haunting Manifestation
Reported: Late 20th century

Radio Clyde’s Studios were reportedly home to an entity that left deep scratch marks on the arms of one guest and was blamed for technical failures.

Ward Sister

Where: Glasgow Royal Infirmary
Activity: Haunting Manifestation
Reported: Sister in 20th century, and patient in 2002

At least one nurse has claimed to have seen a ward sister walking around at night, normal looking other than the fact the apparition appears to be cut off at the knee. Ward 27 is reported to be home to Archie, a ghostly elderly man who wears a bun net and can be seen talking to dying patients. More recently, while answering an arrest call, a doctor was asked the way out by a patient. The doctor pointed over his shoulder as he continued to run down the corridor. When the doctor reached the patient, who had arrested and died, he realised that it was the same man who had asked for directions.

Woman in Black

Where: Silverburn shopping centre

Reported: June 2016

Covered by international media, it was reported that a phantom woman in black had been reported four times over a four week period.

Gorbals Vampire

Where: Southern Necropolis
Activity: Rumoured vampire attack
Reported: 1950s

An urban myth circled the area during the 1950s that the graveyard was home to a vampire with iron teeth. At the story’s height, it is said that hundreds of children patrolled the site, looking for the monster which, they thought, had kidnapped and eaten two local children. Another story to emerge from the Necropolis is that of the white woman – a feminine statue that sits on top of the grave of three people killed in a tramcar accident is said to turns its head and watch visitors as they pass.

Singing

Where: Track between Kelvinbridge and Hillhead stations
Activity: Haunting Manifestation
Reported: Unknown

Cleaning staff working late have reported hearing several women’s voices softly singing along the tunnels.
